Election Campaign completed

Elections of 17 Senate deputies of the Parliament will be held on August 12.  On August 10, at 00:00, the pre-election campaign ended.

By July 24, the CEC registered 58 people as candidates for Senate deputies (upper chamber) of KZ Parliament, while on July 13 the head of the CEC spoke of registering 62 people as candidates.  But later one of the candidates for senators from the Almaty region died, and three more, as explained in the Central Election Commission, withdrew their candidacies on their own.

The chairman of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Berik Imashev, announced on August 10 that 46 candidates will run for the Senate elections.

The largest number of candidates - four - is in the East Kazakhstan region, three candidates each - in Akmola, Atyrau, West Kazakhstan, Karaganda, Kostanay, Kyzylorda and Pavlodar regions, the cities of Nur-Sultan, Almaty and Shymkent.  The rest of the regions will have two candidates for the Senate seat.

The list of electors in the republic includes 3,069 Maslikhat deputies, the largest number in the Almaty region - 317 people and in the East Kazakhstan region - 301 people, the smallest in the capital - 21 people, in Shymkent - 26 and Almaty - 32 people.

According to the head of the CEC, all the necessary measures have been taken in the regions to ensure the sanitary safety of the electoral process, taking into account  epidemiological situation.  On election day, August 12 online monitoring services for the registration of electors and the summing up of preliminary voting results will operate to ensure transparency of the electoral process.

On June 12, 2020, the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree on the appointment of elections of deputies of the Senate of Parliament for August 12. Elections are scheduled due to the expiration of the constitutional term of the deputies office in October 2020. In total, during the current elections,17 deputies of the upper chamber will be elected - one from each region (14 seats), from cities of republican significance (two seats) and the capital (one seat).

The term of office of Senate deputies in Kazakhstan is six years, with half of the chamber re-elected every three years. The previous Senate elections were held in Kazakhstan in June 2017. This year, the nomination phase started on June 13 and ended on July 12. A total of 94 candidates were nominated. The CEC and its territorial divisions registered candidates by July 23, eliminating those who do not meet the requirements for senatorial candidates.
