Kazakhstan officially abolished the death penalty

At the United Nations Headquarters, Kairat Umarov, the Kazakhstan Ambassador to the UN, signed the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

"This document provides for the abolition of the death penalty. Kazakhstan currently has a moratorium on the use of the death penalty. The issue of the need to join this document was raised by Kazakhstan human rights defenders and experts during various discussions at the National Council of Public Trust", Yerlan Karin said, the Assistant to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The use of the death penalty in the Republic of Kazakhstan was suspended by the Presidential Decree on the Introduction of the Corresponding Moratorium in 2003.
