The Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission approved methods for assessing breeding value of farm animals in countries of the Eurasian Economic Union.

Unified methods for assessing, determining productivity and calculating the breeding value of dairy and meat animals are established in al.organizations, farms that raise and (or) sell livestock, as well as in information and analytical centers, breeding centers, and animal breed associations.

"Adopted document will ensure the introduction of modern methods for assessing and forecasting breeding value in the EAEU breeding industry based on the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) method, significantly increase the reliability of assessment and forecast, accelerate genetic progress, make it possible to draw comparisons of breeding animals raised in different regions, ensuring maximum use of breeding producers from the leading group across the Union, and simplify the procedure for transportation of animals between the EAEU member states. This, in turn, will help to increase animals productivity, production of competitive breeding products, reduce dependence on imports and increase the volume of mutual supplies", said Artak Kamalyan, member of the Board (Minister) for Industry and Agroindustrial Complex of the Commission, the EEC press service reported.

Two-year transition period is provided for introduction of methods in production of breeding products.

In the future, the results of breeding value assessment of animals, determined in accordance with the new methods, will be entered in registers of animals (databases) of the EAEU member states, and in breeding documents as well.

Decision of the Board, according to experts, will have a positive impact on development and efficiency of livestock breeding in countries of the Eurasian Economic Union.

The regulatory legal act was developed in accordance with the Treaty on the EAEU and Agreement on measures aimed at unifying selection and breeding of farm animals within the EAEU signed by the Heads of Governments in October 2019.
