Global Food Security Index

According to the results of 2020, Kazakhstan ranked 32nd out of 113 in terms of food security, improving its position by 16 points compared to 2019.

According to the Economist Intelligence Unit, Kazakhstan has become the country with the most significant positive dynamics in terms of improving its position in the 2020 ranking.

The growth was marked by such indicators as the availability of food products for the population, the quality and safety of food products, and the availability of food.

In the list of factors that ensured the increase in the rating, the Economist Intelligence Unit notes the sustainability of production in the agro-industrial sector, the low share of the population below the poverty line, as well as the availability of social programs to ensure food security, market offers and financial services in the agricultural sector.

The content of micronutrients, high quality of proteins that ensure the safety of products is noted in the food industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

International experts took into account the low import tariffs on food products. Improvement was also noted in such indicators as agricultural infrastructure, scientific research in the agricultural sector.

According to the results of 2020, Russia ranked 24th in terms of food security.

A year earlier, Russia was on the 42nd position of the global index.

Belarus is on the 23rd place in the latest ranking (36th place - in 2019).

The Global index, according to its authors, is a "dynamic quantitative and qualitative reference model" built on the basis of 59 different indicators.

The overall score is calculated as a weighted average based on four criteria:

• food accessibility;
• food availability;
• quality and safety;
• diversity of natural resources and their sustainability.

The scores for the four criteria are calculated as a weighted average of the basic indicators and are measured from zero to the maximum possible score of 100.

It is based on data from national and international statistical sources, including the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the World Trade Organization, the World Resources Institute, and the US Department of Agriculture.
