RCOY Central Asia regional youth conference discusses key issues on climate change

The Regional Youth Conference on Climate and Water in Central Asia (RCOY Central Asia) was held for the first time in Astana. Experts debated the topic of climate change at the regional level. They considered key issues in the run-up to COP-27 and COY-17 in Egypt and the UN Water Conference in 2023. The conference welcomed about 150 young activists from Central Asian countries in online and offline formats, as well as representatives of central government agencies, internationa.organizations, NGOs, and experts from think tanks. Representatives of the British and Egyptian embassies were invited as guests. As is known, in order to 'keep afloat' the goal of keeping warming within one and a half degrees, it is necessary to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 45 per cent by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by mid-century. Delegates from other countries, participants of RCOY Central Asia noted the importance of holding such events where all participants have equal opportunities to share their knowledge and experience on water and climate change issues. The coordinator from Kyrgyzstan, Ch. Aitakhunova, noted that events of this nature should be held on a permanent basis in order to solve common problems together. The young activist added that, by working together, the youth of the region would be able to contribute to tackling climate change. The lead expert of the Secretariat for Sustainable Development Goals, Ms. Okusheva, said that besides warming, all natural systems are unbalanced, which leads to changes in precipitation patterns, temperature anomalies and increased frequency of extreme phenomena, such as floods, droughts and forest fires. Successful adaptation to climate change depends not only on government policies, but also on the active and continuous involvement of other actors, including national, regional and internationa.organizations, the public and private sectors and civil society. К. Tusupova, Advisor on Water Security at Satpayev University, made a presentation on the impact of climate change on the hydrological cycle. She also noted that global warming leads to changes in the global water cycle. At the end of the conference, a joint statement was made and key issues on climate change at the regional level were identified. "The United Youth Group of Central Asian countries further plans to send the results of this conference to the Global Youth Conference in Egypt," said S. The next step in the activities of this group of united youth from the region will be participation in the UN Water Conference to be held in New York in 2023.
