Explanation of IMD—2021 Ranking Results

Experts from ERI Center for Strategic Analysis held an explanatory workshop for government agencies on the IMD—2021 Ranking Results Yesterday, on June 30, an explanatory workshop was held for representatives of state agencies on the IMD—2021 World Competitiveness Ranking Results. The event wa.organized by Economic Research Institute JSC (ERI) with the support of the Ministry of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Director of ERI Center for Strategic Analysis Bayan Abdrakhmanova and Deputy Director of the Center for Strategic Analysis Sholpan Kaimoldina acted as moderators and speakers. The event discussed the results of the Ranking 2021, its structure and methodology, algorithm for generating statistical data and conducting a survey. More detailed explanations on individual ranking indicators were given. Following the results of the workshop, it was decided to continue close cooperation between ERI and government agencies in order to study the issues of improving the competitiveness of Kazakhstan in the IMD Ranking. The event was held in an online format. Earlier, on June 17, 2021, the World Competitiveness Center of the International Institute for Management and Development (IMD, Lausanne, Switzerland) announced the results of the IMD 2021 World Competitiveness Ranking. According to the Ranking results, Kazakhstan was ranked 35th, ahead of such countries as Portugal (36th), Italy (41st), India (43rd), Russia (45th), Ukraine (54th). The study evaluated 64 countries of the world. Switzerland, Sweden and Denmark hold the leading positions in the ranking.
The Republic of Kazakhstan started participating in the IMD Ranking for the first time in 2008. Since the same year, Economic Research Institute JSC of the Ministry of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan acted as the IMD partner in Kazakhstan. For reference: The Yearbook of World Competitiveness contains 335 indicators, of which 2/3 are calculated on the basis of statistical data, 1/3 – according to the survey data. The results of this Ranking are based on the combined results of (a) responses of business managers about their perception of the economy in Q1 2021 and (b) statistical data from previous periods.
