"Common Vision of a Better World" — conference for the World Standards Day

On October 13-14, KazStandart RSE held a number of events on the issues of «A common vision of a better world (standards in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals)» within the framework of the World Standardization Day.

 

On October 13, on the eve of the World Standards Day, Erlana Karimova, Deputy Director of the SDG Secretariat of the Economic Research Institute (ERI) JSC, and leading ERI experts Danna Gafyatullina and Aisha Okusheva took part in breakout sessions in four directions:

— Poverty eradication;

— Gender equality;

— Responsible consumption and production;

— Environment.

 

Following the results of the joint brainstorming, the participants of the event from among representatives of government agencies, academia and youth developed models for the successful implementation of the SDGs.

 

The final conference «A common vision of a better world. Standards in Support of Sustainable Development Goals» was held on October 14 with the participation of government agencies, representatives of business, academia and other stakeholders.

 

Chairman of the Committee of Technical Regulation and Metrology of the Ministry of Trade and Integration of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kuanysh Yelikbayev and Acting Chief Production Director of NAC Kazatomprom JSC Aliya Akzholova made welcoming remarks. The speakers addressed the participants with congratulatory words and outlined the importance of standards in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

 

«The volume of the green finance market in Kazakhstan is $ 188 million», — Aidar Kazybayev, Director General of the AIFC Center for Green Finance, Chairman of the National ESG Clubannounced in his report.


The speaker focused on the taxonomy of green projects in the country.

 

He noted that in the field of taxonomy of green projects there is a shortage of national standards in the following areas:

 green and energy-efficient buildings – standards of energy consumption in the built environment, sustainability in buildings and construction works, building design

energy efficiency  – energy consumption and energy saving standards

sustainable agriculture and sustainable tourism — ecological labeling  eco-labeling standards fo.organic products and organic agriculture, sustainable tourism, in the field of hotels and hotels.

 

In addition, Aidar Kazybayev called ESG reporting (environmental, social and corporate governance) an important tool for developing the practice of sustainable development of companies.


«The UN 2030 Agenda is an ambitious action plan aimed at strengthening peace and prosperity, eradicating poverty and protecting the planet on a global scale, and developed standards and requirements are needed for its qualitative implementation. Today, ISO (International Organization for Standardization) offers more than 22,000 international standards, in the industrial sector alone it is about 14,000 ISO series standards. For the effective implementation of the SDGs, it is possible to audit the regulatory legal acts regulating the directions of the Sustainable Development Goals and introduce the missing standards», — said the Deputy Director of the Secretariat for the Sustainable Development Goals of ERI Altyngul Utebayeva. 

 

The International Organization for Standardization, ISO (ISO) is an international organization engaged in the production of standards. ISO defines its tasks as follows: to promote the development of standardization and related activities in the world in order to ensure the international exchange of goods and services, as well as the development of cooperation in intellectual, scientific, technical and economic fields.

Mentai Chayakhmetova, Head of the Standardization and Certification Department of PIK YUTARIA LTD LLP, made a presentation as a business representative on the topic «Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals at light industry enterprises».


According to her, the company's activities comply with such SDGs as: poverty eradication; hunger eradication; good health and well-being; quality education; gender equality; clean water and sanitation for all; decent work and economic growth; industrialization, innovation and infrastructure; reducing inequality between people; responsible consumption and production; partnership in in the interests of sustainable development.

 

ECOJER Association expert Alan Bokaev told the conference participants about the state and potential of production from renewable energy sources and alternative energy.  During his speech, he also outlined the principles of the circular economy.

 

The principles and standards of ESG in NAC Kazatomprom JSC were presented by Telman Shuriev and Nikita Veretelnikov.

 

Following the conference, the participants noted the real importance of standards in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Following the results of the events held by RSE "KazStandart" as part of the celebration of the World Standards Day, an award ceremony was held for the winners and employees of the standardization departments of enterprises for achievements in this field.
