Kazakhstan's Transport Sector: A Dynamic Overview of 2023 Performance

In 2023 the growth rate of the "Transportation and Storage" sector reached 106.9% YoY, marking a 2.3 percentage point contraction since the beginning of 2022. Notably, the sector's growth slowed by 3.2 percentage points from the end of 2022.
 
Key Indicators:
  • Total freight transported in Kazakhstan amounted to 980.7 million tons, an increase of 4.4% compared to the previous year.
  • The freight turnover across all modes of transport reached 501.3 billion ton-kilometers, showcasing a 3.1% YoY increase.
  • Passenger turnover reached 72.8 billion passenger-kilometers, growing by 10.3%.
  • A total of 1579.9 million passengers were transported, indicating an 8.3% increase.
 Transport Modes Breakdown:
Rail Transport:
  • Freight transported: 416.4 million tons (+2.8% YoY).
  • Rail freight turnover: 326.8 billion ton-kilometers (+4.8% YoY).
  • Passengers transported: 19.8 million (+2.1% YoY).
  • Passenger turnover: 16.1 billion passenger-kilometers (-1.5% YoY).
Road Transport:
  • Freight transported: 287.2 million tons (+10.6% YoY).
  • Road freight turnover: 29.8 million ton-kilometers (+1.7% YoY).
  • Passengers transported: 1,547 million (+8.3% YoY).
  • Passenger turnover: 30.7 billion passenger-kilometers (+4.2% YoY).
Pipeline Transport:
  • Freight transported: 275 million tons (+0.8% YoY).
  • Pipeline freight turnover: 143.7 billion ton-kilometers (-0.2% YoY).
Air Transport:
  • Passengers transported: 13.3 million (+20.7% YoY).
  • Passenger turnover: 25.9 billion passenger-kilometers (+28.8% YoY).
Inland Water Transport:
  • Freight transported: 762.2 thousand tons (+9.5% YoY).
  • Passengers transported: 121.1 thousand (-15.4% YoY).
Sea Transport:
  • Freight transported: 1325.4 thousand tons (+11% YoY).
  • Sea freight turnover: 859 million ton-kilometers (+26% YoY).
Financial Performance:
  • Total revenues from transportation reached 5,260.4 billion tenge, showing a robust 29.2% YoY growth.
  • Income from cargo transportation, including baggage, reached 4,193.7 billion tenge (+28.5% YoY).
  • Passenger transportation contributed 1,066.7 billion tenge to revenues, marking a 32.1% YoY increase.
Rental Income Surge:
  • Revenues from renting out vehicles with drivers (crews) grew by 5.8% YoY, climbing from 202.7 billion tenge in 2022 to 214.5 billion tenge in 2023.
