III Kazakhstan–China Think Tank Forum

![]() On June 12, 2026, the III Kazakhstan–China Think Tank Forum was held in Beijing, China. The event was jointl.organized by the Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (KazISS). The forum served as an important platform for discussing issues of strategic significance not only for Kazakhstan and China, but also for the broader Eurasian region. The Kazakh delegation included representatives of the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Institute for Philosophy, Political Science and Religious Studies of the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, JSC Economic Research Institute (ERI), Astana International University, and Almaty Management University. As part of the Kazakh delegation, Birzhan Batkeyev, Chairman of the Management Board of the Economic Research Institute, delivered a presentation titled “The Current State and Prospects of Cooperation in the Context of the Global Transformation of the World Economy.” In his remarks, Mr. Batkeyev emphasized that relations between Kazakhstan and China are built on a high level of political trust and a strong legal framework, including the recently ratified Agreement on the Promotion and Mutual Protection of Investments. China remains Kazakhstan’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching USD 34.1 billion in 2025, an increase of more than 13% compared to the previous year.
Currently, around 250 projects involving Chinese capital are at various stages of implementation. An increasing share of new projects is concentrated in processing industries, manufacturing, agriculture, and energy. Special attention in the presentation was given to transport and logistics cooperation. Mr. Batkeyev highlighted the growing importance of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor), which is increasingly viewed not only as a transit route but also as a platform for new industrial, logistics, and investment projects. Following the forum, participants reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening practical cooperation between the think tanks of Kazakhstan and China. They noted that the development of trade, investment cooperation, transport connectivity, and industrial collaboration forms the foundation for the long-term economic resilience of the Eurasian region.
