The OECD has published “Due diligence essentials for responsible minerals”, a sector-focused publication examining risk-based due diligence in mineral supply chains.
Minerals
play an essential role in energy, transport, construction, industry
and modern technologies. However, their extraction, processing and
trade are associated with significant environmental, social and
governance risks.
The
publication explores the characteristics of mineral value chains,
environmental impacts, human rights and labour conditions,
corruption, illicit trade and risks of financing armed groups. It
also examines the challenges and opportunities of implementing
effective due diligence, including the use of international standards
and traceability systems.
The
publication is primarily intended for companies outside the mining
sector seeking to understand their exposure to minerals-related
risks, as well as policymakers and other stakeholders.
