On July 17, 2023, the Secretariat of the National Contact Point of Kazakhstan (NCP) represented by the Economic Research Institute JSC (ERI) held a field seminar for regional leaders of the Civic Alliance of Kazakhstan ALE for the city of Almaty. As part of the seminar, representatives of the NCP Secretariat presented the current work, activities, and functioning of the NCPs of Kazakhstan. They shared in more detail about responsible business conduct (RBC) and that all businesses - regardless of their legal status, size, ownership, or sector - should avoid and address the negative impacts of their activities while contributing to the sustainable development of the countries in which they operate. With the help of RBC, businesses can make a positive contribution to economic growth and development. The NCP Secretariat currently has six specific cases in which inspections have been carried out for violations of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. The Secretariat also elaborated on how to submit an appeal to the NCPs, as well as how they are handled. In addition, the Secretariat shared the experiences of other NCPs in handling referrals for large global multinational enterprises. In turn, regional leaders expressed interest in the NCP mechanism and noted that a significant number of multinational enterprises are located and operate in Almaty and Almaty region. Thus, the functioning of another means of legal protection of the population was welcomed positively by regional leaders. At the end of the meeting, the participants thanked for the informative meeting and noted the need for further joint cooperation. For reference: The NCP is a collegial advisory body that makes decisions on pending appeals regarding violations of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, including disclosure, human rights, labor and industrial relations, anti-bribery, bribery and extortion, environmental protection, consumer interests, science and technology, competition and taxation.
