6th Round Table on Responsible Supply Chains in the Clothing and Footwear Sector

On February 19, 2024, the 6th Round Table on Responsible Supply Chains in the Clothing and Footwear Sector was held. The event attracted the attention of key industry participants, including representatives of brands, manufacturers, trade unions and governments. On the part of Kazakhstan, representatives of the Secretariat of the NCP of Kazakhstan, represented by Economic Research Institute JSC, took part online. As part of the Round Table, discussions were held with the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Center for Child Rights and Business, as well as GoodWeave International, where difficult and often overlooked issues related to correcting the consequences of child labor in the garment industry were raised. Participants discussed challenges at all levels of supply chains, aiming to provide an overview of effective recovery strategies and tools for garment companies. The discussion included a review of recent developments and new practices, offering valuable points of view to inform and guide stakeholders. The participants of discussion presented current practical steps that can be taken by garment companies facing child labor issues at various levels of their supply chains. Representatives of brands, manufacturers, trade unions and governments also shared their experiences and the implementation of number of existing agreements, highlighting successful practices and principles that contribute to increased responsibility in the industry. The importance of such agreements in the context of mandatory due diligence legislation was also discussed, highlighting their key role in ensuring transparency and compliance with high standards. This Round Table demonstrated the importance of joint efforts to solve the problem of child labor in the garment industry and outlined a vector for further steps towards responsible supply chains in the clothing and footwear industry. Thus, participants had the opportunity to share relevant updates on initiatives to promote, expand and evaluate due diligence of supply chain commitments. At the end of the event, the participants were thanked for their fruitful and active discussion.
