Seminar for Association "PharmMedIndustry of Kazakhstan"

24.04.2024

On April 24, 2024, the Secretariat of the National Contact Point of Kazakhstan (hereinafter - the Secretariat, NCP), represented by Economic Research Institute JSC, held a seminar for representatives of the Association "PharmMedIndustry of Kazakhstan" (Association).

This seminar is a result of implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation signed on August 11, 2023 between the Secretariat and the Association.

The following issues were considered during the seminar:
standards of responsible business conduct;
recent updates to the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises;
the activities of the National Contact Point of Kazakhstan.

Within the framework of the seminar, the main emphasis was placed on the introduction of standards of responsible business conduct by enterprises in the light of recent trends in a number of foreign countries on the mandatory introduction of due diligence into their legislative acts.

It should be noted that due diligence is one of the elements included in the standards of responsible business conduct developed by the OECD, and implies the identification, prevention or mitigation of consequences and consideration of how the actual and potential adverse effects of enterprises are eliminated. Thus, enterprises that want or already work with enterprises where such rules are legislated should also apply them or carry out preparatory work, since due diligence also applies to business partners within supply chains.

In addition, the Secretariat went into detail on the functions of the NCP to address complaints of potential violations of the OECD Guidelines. The Secretariat also said that with the latest updates, the NCP has a new function to provide recommendations to the Government on developing proposals for policy coherence with standards of responsible business conduct.

In turn, questions were received from those present regarding the role of the NCP for enterprises, the mechanism for reviewing complaints, etc., to which exhaustive answers were received.

Following the results of the seminar, the relevance of information on standards of responsible business conduct, the activities of the NCP and the high interest among the participants were noted.
