Improving Framework Conditions for the Extraction of Critical Raw Materials

On March 13, 2025, representatives of JSC “Economic Research Institute” participated in the seminar “Improving Framework Conditions for the Extraction of Critical Raw Materials”.organized to discuss the environmental and social aspects of subsoil use, the implementation of responsible business conduct standards, and the enhancement of Kazakhstan’s investment attractiveness.

Opening the seminar, Vice Minister of Industry and Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan Iran Sharkhan emphasized the importance of adhering to the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. During the event, William Thompson, OECD Director for International Relations, presented the system for legal due diligence in mineral supply chains, while Sarah Cooper, OECD Director for Regional Development, expressed the Organization’s readiness to support Kazakhstan in developing the critical raw materials (CRM) sector.

The Economic Research Institute was represented by Alibek Raipov, Director of the World Economy Research Center, who highlighted the promotion of the OECD Guidelines through the National Contact Point and underscored the importance of implementing responsible business conduct (RBC) standards to attract investment and ensure sustainable economic growth.

The seminar also featured presentations by experts on ESG risks, water resources, processing, and environmental management. Concluding the event, participants discussed prospects for local mineral processing, reducing environmental impact, and integrating Kazakhstan into sustainable global supply chains.

The Economic Research Institute will continue to actively support RBC initiatives and cooperate with international partners to promote the responsible and sustainable development of the extractive sector.
